Additive.earth Explores New Horizons in Canada for Seaweed Economic Accelerator Programme

Additive.earth, a pioneer in sustainability and climate resilience, was honoured to be selected as one of just 20 UK marine technology businesses to participate in the prestigious Global Business Innovation Programme (GBIP) visit to Canada. Organised by Innovate UK, this initiative aims to explore innovation opportunities in Atlantic Canada’s ocean technology sector. The visit included a tailored innovation tour, participation in Canada’s premier ocean industry event, and strategic discussions on the potential of a ‘Seaweed Economic Accelerator’ programme.

A Strategic Visit to Atlantic Canada

The GBIP visit to Canada is part of a structured programme designed to maximise business opportunities through preparation, a tailored innovation visit, and post-visit support. The programme featured a 2-day bespoke tour in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and participation at the H2O: Home to Overseas Conference and Exhibition. This premier event offered exclusive networking opportunities and pre-arranged B2B meetings with potential international partners.

Key Engagements and Discussions

During the visit, Rob Passmore, CEO of Additive.earth, engaged with a range of influential organisations to discuss the transformative potential of seaweed aquaculture and the Seaweed Economic Accelerator programme. Meetings were held with:

  • Ocean Frontier Institute
  • Government of Nova Scotia
  • Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association
  • Innovation Canada
  • Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency
  • Invest Nova Scotia
  • Crown Estate Scotland
  • University College London
  • University of Plymouth
  • National Indigenous Fisheries Institute
  • Global Affairs Canada

These discussions focused on building a science-based public-private partnership to establish seaweed biorefineries and accelerate biomass production to displace petrochemical-sourced ingredients in multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food and beverages, agriculture, and biofuels.
